Best Mardi Gras Memory
In 1988, while at a Mobile, AL Mardi Gras Day parade, my oldest
daughter, Diana, was sitting on my shoulders. I was waving her arms and
the crowd was repeatedly yelling 'moonpie'. Diana started yelling
'moonpie' also. Since this was her first word, my wife turned around
and said, 'No. Say mommie! Say mommie!' But Diana kept saying
'moonpie' over and over again. My wife desperately kept trying to get
her to say mommie instead, but all that would come out of her mouth was
'moonpie'. We tell her that she must have been a smart baby, because
her first word was a compound word. Diana is about to turn 16 this year
in May. Rumor has it that One is not a true Mobilian unless your first
words are Moonpie. After all, we started the Mardi Gras celebration,
New Orleans' commercialized and promoted it quicker due to thier large
population compared to Mobile's population.
