Most Faithful Memory

(retyped verbatim from hand-written submission)
Dear Sirs,
I am not sure how creative this story will be but I did want to write about a dear friend of mine, who for decades, ate Moon Pies for his breakfast daily.

Gene owned a convenience store but also worked as a fishing guide. Prior to leaving out in our boats every morning we discussed what we had for breakfast. We all knew, without a doubt, that Gene had a Moon Pie and a cup of coffee. It was just a question of "what kind of Moon Pie today?"

A few years later he sold his store and we kidded him about not having a MoonPie off his counter every morning. He let me know that he now goes to Wal-Mart and buys them by the box.

Gene has suffered with poor health the past few years and had to put his wife in an Alzheimer's nursing home this past year. She passed away about two months ago. If things were not bad enough for him, he had a near fatal auto accident three weeks ago. He is still in intensive care and the prognosis is not good. Numerous broken bones, a tracheotomy, feeding tube and head injuries. He is not able to speak but recognizes and tries to communicate. When I went in to visit him the first thing I could think of to say to him was "have you had your Moon Pie today?" He immediately raised his eyebrows and nodded toward the feeding tube. At seventy-eight he still has a sense of humor and is a very loved person by all that know him
