Longest Distance Memory
I recently saw your commercial on tv, it brought back fond memories,
here is my story, might even make a good commercial or ad.
While serving in the marine corp in 1984, I was on a ship off the coast
of Korea. We were there to play what they call war games, to test our
strategies. We left the ship early one morning before the sun came up.
We departed on smaller amphibius water craft, as we approached the beach
it was raining. What a miserable day. After hitting the beach we jumped
into large trucks, we drove for what seemed like hours into the moutains
of korea. Cold and wet, the convoy came to a halt along the roadside.
We had no idea where we were, but as young marines do, we did what our
officer in charge told us to. Out of the trucks we jumped, back into the
pouring rain. The only thing that we could see were MOUNTAINS on both
sides of the road. The captain had passed the word that we would make
camp on the other side of the mountain that stood to our north. We climbed
that mountain for five (5) hours, which seemed to be straight up. Upon
reaching the top and part way over the other side it seemed to flatten.
This is where we would make our camp for the next 12 days (keep in mind
we had everything in our backpack to live for those 12 days). No roads
in, no roads out, for all we knew we were in the middle of nowhere. We
boke up into our squads and started to set up our two man tents. About
ten minutes into set-up out of the bushes walked an elderly lady (between
50 to 60 we guessed) balancing a large wash tub on her head with a make
shift backpack made from a sheet. Linda, this lady had approximately 30
pepsi's in this tub, in the make shift backpack she had assorted boxes
of snacks. She had three boxes of MOONPIES, if I remember right there
were 10 or 12 in a box, I bought 2 of the three boxes for myself and my
squad. When I tell you that they tasted like heaven, that would be an
understatement. I gave my 5 marines and myself a break from set-up and
we ate every last crumb, to this day I remember that day, but I still
do not know to this day how she climbed that mountain with everything
she had, but I was sure glad that she had those MOOONPIES. I've always
loved MOONPIES even as a child( born 1960). The only thing I think about
is why she didn't bring a milk cow with her, she could of loaded everything
on and I could of had a glass of milk too. I' m 42 years old and still
love eating MOONPIES with a glass of milk! My wife says that I'm nothing
more than an oversized kid, because I always make sure that when she goes
to the store she buys MOONPIES. I' ve even got my children hooked on them.
Thanks for reading my memories
